What will an off-site Tooling Audit or Evaluation do for you?
Tooling management 101:
A tooling audit will capture 50 essential data points relative to hardware (tool and press), peripheral equipment, spares, material designations, documentation, current tool condition, performance attributes and all relative intelligence prior to a vendor to vendor tooling transfer, or immediately before or after an acquisition.
A tooling evaluation will capture current tool condition, classification, age, number of cycles, and performance concerns that will enable action to address high scrap rates, mechanical breakdowns, and supply chain interruptions, and will often provide the justification to support capital appropriation and ROI for replacement tooling where risk exists. - When applied to transfer tooling, a tooling evaluation will provide a snap-shot that will enable planning and budgeting for repairs.

When your off-site mold tools were validated, you had a good understanding of tool output, tool cycle and Cpk, - but now the tools are older, these values are affected by a new “variable” or “dynamic”, - “Current Tool Condition”.
These mold tools are out of sight, and therefore intangible, but if you thought your scrap rate and internal OEE were impacted, that would get your attention, right?
Molding vendors largely deal with maintenance issues, and often have to tweak the process to facilitate “aging” tooling, - basically changing the playing field, and almost certainly impacting capability over the long term, which in effect lowers your production Cpk. The lowered Cpk predicts higher scrap, and thus your production OEE rate will be lower.
Your off-site tooling may be the root cause of your lower OEE.

What is reverse-engineered tooling, and why would I need it?
Your mold tool is reaching the end of it’s life, and future needs, high scrap levels and constant maintenance justify the cost of replacement tooling. Through poor document control, acquisitions, maintenance, modifications, tool transfers and tool wear, the part drawing no longer reflects the part that the tooling is currently making.
In the simplest terms: Replacement tooling provides not only durability and longevity, but represents a great opportunity for performance enhancements, scrap reduction, and document alignment / reconciliation.
Following a step by step protocol acquired from managing multiple reverse engineered projects (existing part to new tool / part), our objective is to insure full reconciliation, - where the new tool and part satisfy validation / re-qualification requirements, and fully align with all relevant documentation. Reverse engineering a mold tool from an existing part insures a replica, as opposed to making a replacement tool from an existing tool or part drawing.

You may have specified and paid for class 101 tooling, (the best), however the manufacturing practices and craftsmanship from foreign made tooling will manifest itself in terms of durability, necessitating an added step in the reshoring process: Assessing the quality and durability of the mold as it relates to longevity, (tool life).
